Overview

The Director of Safety & Training leads the Propel Safety & Training department of Propel Career Academy, overseeing the delivery and growth of workforce development, continuing education, and safety training programs—including safety certifications, technical upskilling, leadership development, and industry-recognized credentials in welding, electrical, HVAC, and other emerging trades.

 

While this position partners closely with the President of Propel Career Academy to build and implement new programs and initiatives, its primary focus is on running and optimizing the Center’s day-to-day operations, ensuring quality, compliance, and measurable outcomes for all offerings.

 

This position reports to the President of Propel Career Academy and collaborates closely with Business Development, Director of Education, Director of Student Success & Development, and regional leadership teams.

Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Direct all daily operations of the Propel Safety & Training Center, including workforce development, continuing education, and safety programs.
  • Manage scheduling, hiring, staffing, budgeting, and resource allocation for all training initiatives to meet organizational goals and client expectations.
  • Ensure all programs meet regulatory, accrediting, and certifying standards (OSHA, NCCER, MEWP, LEED, and other industry credentials).
  • Develop and track KPIs to deliver timely, relevant data reporting to leadership for continuous improvement.

Program & Curriculum Management

  • Oversee development, delivery, and quality assurance of all training programs—including safety, technical upskilling, leadership development, and continuing education.
  • Integrate hands-on learning and real-world simulations to enhance job readiness.
  • Align curriculum with industry trends, regulatory changes, and client workforce needs.
  • Offer flexible training formats (in-person, on-site, online, evenings/weekends) to accommodate working professionals and corporate clients.

Business Development & Client Engagement

  • Partner with the President to implement and grow the business plan for the Safety & Training Center, including new revenue streams, regional expansion, and external client services.
  • Support marketing and sales strategies to attract individual professionals and corporate partners.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with construction firms, contractors, associations, unions, and equipment suppliers to increase participation and sponsorship of programs.
  • Represent the Center at safety councils, workforce boards, trade shows, and industry events.

Data, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of existing business and operational practices to ensure compliance and efficiency.
  • Move all processes, forms, and reporting to fully digital formats, implementing systems for certification tracking, reporting, and predictive analytics.
  • Monitor and evaluate program outcomes, student satisfaction, and client impact to inform continuous improvement.

Culture & Leadership

  • Build a culture of professionalism, engagement, and transparency across all training and safety initiatives.
  • Recruit, develop, and manage instructors and staff who deliver high-quality training experiences.
  • Provide coaching and professional development to ensure alignment with organizational goals and instructional excellence.
  • Collaborate across departments to integrate workforce development initiatives with broader organizational strategies.

Expectations & Work Conditions

  • Primary Work Location: Based at the San Antonio campus.
  • Working Hours: Must accommodate varied scheduled trainings between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
  • Adaptability & Flexibility: Ability to adjust to evolving business needs, priorities, schedules, and tasks as the organization grows and expands.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Maintain strong collaboration and transparent communication with regional teams, leadership, and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in workforce development, training operations, safety and compliance management, or related fields within the construction or skilled trades industries.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing multi-trade training programs (welding, electrical, HVAC, safety, etc.) and aligning them with industry certifications, regulatory requirements, and adult learning best practices.
  • Strong networking and relationship-building skills to cultivate partnerships with industry leaders, associations, unions, and corporate clients.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills, with the ability to represent the organization at conferences, trade shows, client meetings, and internal events.
  • Proven operational management abilities, including budget oversight, scheduling, and staff development.
  • Experience implementing digital training and safety systems, data tracking, and predictive modeling.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and client engagement skills.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and work flexible hours to meet organizational needs.
